I came across this site while I was surfing the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree. Someone asked if they had any pictures or "good" news about what was happening in Yogya and someone recommended this site. It has a few pictures and an insight from a guy who is doing relief work there.

Reflection #5

Indonesian history is pretty interesting. It's a long and varied hardship through oppression, liberty and lies. I guess most countries have some sort of mix like that though. I think the future has to catch up with Indonesia's past. For example, over the past few weeks there's been things about Soeharto and how he's "getting away" with things because he's pretty sick. Some people are a bit uppity about him getting away because he's ill - but realistically, you can't put someone on trial if they are on their death bed! Some people support him, but I wonder if they would support him if they knew the truth about how he came into power. I doubt many Indonesians even now would know how he really came into power. That's really sad. It's like generations of people being lied to here, they just don't know it. But I wonder if people knew about the cover up, Indonesia would become a better place. I was having a conversation with someone yesterday who said that Jakarta would have to be blown up just for Indonesia to repair itself. That's pretty huge.

I think the whole reformasi thing that happened in the 90's was a good thing though. At least there are little bits of reformation going on, like Bu Indra said there was a deregulation of media or something like that. (Although I'm sure the Government still regulates it a little...) I guess it's got to be one step at a time, especially when there are plenty of wrongs to right.

I was watching 60 Minutes on the weekend and they had this segment about people in Papua. I'm not sure which part of Papua it was though... as in Irian Jaya (West Papua) or Papua New Guinea (East Papua). But it was really interesting. These 2 white guys (one of whom was a regular reporter on 60 Minutes) went into the jungle with some local guides. They went to the local guides village first and they were dressed up as you could probably imagine people from the stone age! They were a cannibalistic tribe. One of the men said that their brother told him that someone was a witch doctor and put a curse or something on the brother. So he decided to kill the witch doctor and ate him up. Apparently they eat everything except for their teeth and nails. When I saw it was like, "wow! somewhere in the depths of all these jungles (like the Amazon perhaps or relatively uncharted territories like Papua) there are people who still live like people back in time!"

None of these people have ever seen white people before and thought they were ghosts when they heard that there white people roaming. Imagine that compared to the bustling cities of Jakarta where they have definetely seen white people before and don't dress up as people from the stone age (unless theyre at a dress up party?)

I think it's cool to have a country such as Indonesia that generally embraces different faiths more openly than too politically correct such as Australia. Or France. I could go on about this, but I'll spare you all. But if you want to know my view, then feel free to ask - but I warn you, I could go on about Western civilisation's loss via political correctness. I think multi-religious activities/events really culturally enriches a society. It's a pity that there are people who generally just are politically correct (Eg not being allowed to wear religious symbols such as crosses, jewish skull caps, or the jilbab) or people who want to harm other people because they don't share their faith (eg "muslim" terrorists). :-/

Something my uncle (who is English Australian) pointed out to me was that most of the bombers from Indonesia are from Solo (I think he said). He actually went to the city where most of the bombers were from and when he got out of the car, everyone was looking at him cos he was the only white man there. I thought that was kind of funny.

Bu Indra also spoke about one of her ex-students who was going to marry an Indonesian lady but her parents sort of put him off because her parents wanted to do the full-set traditional Indonesian wedding. I think that if he really wanted to marry her he would have done it the Indonesian parents way. *shrugs* Sometimes you just have to go through 'pain' to get to the good stuff. But anyway, one of my Indonesian friends is getting married and I managed to go to her engagement party when I got back from the east coast the summer holidays. (Note: She had two engagement parties. This is the one her mother put on for a "small" crowd which turned out to be around 50 people! My friend's only guests were me and a girl from her class because we hd missed out on her real engagement party). Anyway, my friend was supposedly wearing a traditional engagement/wedding dress from her dad's part of Indonesia, which I think may be Padang. But I'm not entirely sure. It was really nice though but it didn't look like any of the dresses in the book. What a shame.

At that engagement party we had a buffet - but not a selamatan, which according to the book is a buffet style ceremonial meal for special occassions. However, we did have Nasi Tumpeng, which is this special cone-shaped rice. They ordered two nasi tumpengs from a er special nasi tumpeng maker. The nasi tumpeng was in the middle of the dish. Around the nasi tumpeng were about 5-6 different foods such as vegetables and prawns.

Apparently in Indonesia if you don't say you belong to a religion, it's a bit weird. Bu Indra suggested to us that we should say we're Christian if you don't belong to a religion. I'm not so sure about that one though. She says we should all know a little bit about it since we live here but some people really don't know anything about Christianity except that there's like Easter, Christmas, the Holy Book is the Bible and that there's this dude called Jesus. (Or people who fully believe The Da Vinci Code even though it's a fictional book). Imagine if you were probed by the Indonesian who was a Christian! o.o

I was actually having a conversation with someone called Jordan on saturday night. He wasn't baptised in any religion because his dad was Greek Orthodox and his mum was something else and the families didn't get along and didn't agree about where he should be baptised but he can imagine the Greek part of his family smuggling him into church and secretly baptising him. Anyway, his best friend who is a Roman Catholic asked him to become his baby's Godfather. So when they had the meeting with the priest, the priest asked Jordan whether he was a Catholic and he lied and said he was one. Jordan then said that he could imagine that when he reached the pearly gates that St Peter was going to open up the book and say, "I see you lied about being a Roman Catholic to a priest. You're going to hell!" I laughed at that. So for those of you who are considering turning Christian just for the sake of not being thought of as weird in Indonesia, consider before you really do say you belong to a certain religious group that you don't belong to. It might be marked against you on Judgement Day or you might be re-incarnated into something 'lowly'.

If someone does something to someone or something, the verb that describes that action is a transitive verb. The one who does the action is the agent. The person or thing that receives the action of the action is the recipient. In Indonesian, if the agent and/or the action is the main concern of the sentence, the "active" form of the verb is used, which means the verb takes the prefix meN-*. Often, but not always, the agent will be the subject of an active sentence. The exception is if the verb is in a "yang phrase" and the agent is not in that phrase; then, the agent is the predicate and the verb in the "yang phrase" is active. If the agent is in the "yang phrase" with the verb, the verb is "passive". If the recipient of the action is the main concern of the sentence, the "passive" form of the verb is used. Often, but not always, the recipient will be the subject of a passive sentence. The exception is as mentioned above: if the verb is in a "yang phrase" and the recipient is not in that phrase, the recipient is the predicate and the verb in the "yang phrase" is passive. In the passive, the verb is preceded either by :

(1) short forms of the intimate pronouns (ku-, kau-) or di-; or by

(2) the full forms of the formal pronouns (saya; Anda, Saudara, Bapak, etc;
beliau); or by the plural pronouns (kami, kita, kalian, mereka).

In all cases, NOTHING (no auxiliary word such as bisa, harus, akan, etc.) comes between the pronoun form and the verb stem. In the case of third person passive, the noun or pronoun(-nya) which designates the agent comes after the verb, optionally preceded by oleh ("by"). Except for sentences where the verb is in a yang phrase, the subject of a passive verb is the recipient, and often precedes the verb. With subject /predicate inversion the recipient-subject may come after the passive verb.

Passive and Active sentences, Chapter 4 style

I admit I don't fully get the whole passive/active sentence thing, but I do try my best. Anyway, this is how I figure is best how to learn it. All full, "correct" sentences should have a subject, verb and an object. For example, "I played with the dog." would have "I" as the subject, "Played" as the verb and "Dog" as the object.

Step 1: Figure out what point of view the sentence is.
A 1st person point of view will say, "I, we" or "Saya, aku, kita, kami"
A 2nd person point of view will say, "You" or "Anda, kamu"
A 3rd person point of view will say, "He, She, They, Them, or that person's name" or "Dia, Mereka, (insert name here)"

STEP 2: Figure out whether the sentence is an active sentence or a passive sentence.
An ACTIVE sentence is one that focuses on the subject. An example of an active sentence is, "I wrote that book" as it focuses on me having written the book.

A PASSIVE sentence is one which focuses on the object. An example of a passive sentence is, "That book was written by me" and it focuses on the book more than me being the author of it.

Step 3: Change the sentence type
Ok by changing the sentence type, obviously I mean going from changing an active sentence to a passive one, and a passive sentence into an active one.

Changing from an active sentence to a passive sentence
As mentioned before, an active sentence will be Subject + Verb + Object such as "Anne wrote that book" where "I" is the subject, "Wrote" is the verb and "Book" is the object. So because this is an active sentence and I want to change it to an passive sentence, I want the sentence structure to be Object + Verb + Subject. Therefore, the sentence will be "This book was written by Anne".

Or in Indonesian:
Anne menulis buku itu (Active sentence) --> Buku itu ditulis oleh Anne (Passive sentence).

Things to note:
* 'menulis' changes to 'ditulis'. Basically the key is just to drop the "me" from the verb and change it to a "di".
* 'oleh' means 'by'... just use it whenever you're writing a passive sentence to be safe.

When changing the passive into an active, just move the words around to make the Subject + Verb + Object pattern. But remove the "di" from the verb and add the "me-" prefix. And remove the 'oleh'

Arisan! film review

Tackling Indonesian social taboos, Arisan! is a film directed by Nia Di Nata that revolves around three 30-something socially elite friends living in Jakarta. These 3 friends join an arisan group, which is a joint financial pool conducted between groups of people such as friends or colleagues in order to foster relationships. Through this arisan group, these 3 friends’ secrets are unravelled and friendships are put to the test.

The social issues displayed in this film are infertility, infidelity and homosexuality. Aniden (Aida Nrmala) is the presider of the arisan group and is seen to have the ‘perfect’ life as she has a husband and children and is well off. However, infidelity rocks her marriage even though she tries hard to sexually please her husband. Meimei (Cut Mini Theo) is a successful interior designer who is desperately trying to have children and her life is shaken when her doctor tells her that she is infertile.

Although homosexuality in Indonesia is not illegal, it is seen as a taboo in Indonesian society. Arisan! is famed as one of Indonesian’s first mainstream films that successfully tackles the issue of homosexuality and of ‘coming out’ in a realistic manner as Sakti (Tora Sudro) is not stereotyped as an effeminate gay, but as an average male who is just troubled by his sexual orientation and about how his family and friends will react to it. Because of this, Sakti was my favourite character and indeed, Tora Sudro’s acting outshined the rest of the cast.

I give this movie 3 stars.

It's been a very long time since I've posted about my learning of Indonesian. I can't believe it's already the mid-sems - and I haven't even posted anything up yet about Indonesian! Time just flies by when you're busy.

So far Indonesian has been interesting. It's a bit more difficult, as one could imagine. I think people really need to put the effort in, especially me. We just had a quiz which I think I failed. I think it's because even though we have a vocabulary list at the end of each chapter, we don't actually really go through them so you don't think you need to know it as much as the other words we use more often during classes. If we do actually go through the words, we probably have only heard it once but we don't remember learning. So I guess this year is the start of REAL self-learning in Indonesian!

Basically you attach ke to the front of a noun, and an to the end of the noun to mean that you affected or over come by that noun.

For example:

On friday, Bu Indra was really keen for us to hear Peterpan and Yuni Shara as apparently music is part of our topic, 'going on holidays'. I was just telling one of my friends about how I have like... 2 words from the song stuck in my head right now. I've got 'apa denganmu' in my head. Earlier, I was telling her about what Bu Indra told us about people getting paid 20 cents per word as a translator and all these other things she says about the things you can do with Indonesian in the future. And that Bu Indra wants at least one of her students to create an Indonesian video or texts. I said to my friend that she can do all the artistic designer stuff, and I'll just feed her with the phrases. It could work!

But anyway, back to the main topic - musik. Bu Indra showed us video clips of Peterpan's Ada Apa Denganmu and one of Yuni's songs.

Because our translation of Ada Apa Denganmu isn't that great, I looked it up. I found something I thought was funny at http://indolaysia.typepad.com/some_southeast_asian_junk/music/

Is there a difference between "oranye" and "jingga". I have been taught in Malay and Indonesian that 'jingga' is orange - not oranye, yet I am consistently seeing the word "oranye" in an Indonesian Learning Wikibook.

Fortunately enough, Wikibooks can be edited by everyone, so I've changed all the words that I think are wrong (such as oranye) into words I think are right (such as jingga)! This might seem a bit tedious and... well, frankly a bit rude (because the person who wrote this wikibook should know what theyre doing if theyre writing a hand book!) But hey, jingga is right too. :p

Dong
Dong is used to emphasise an idea expressed. For example:

Eg: Anda mau bermain bola basket? Ya, mau dong!

In this case, "Ya, mau dong!" means, "Yes, I really want to!"

The difference between Musti and Harus
Musti is used informally. It is only used verbally. Harus is formal, and can be used verbally or in writing.

Yang lalu
Yang lalu is used when talking about something in the past. For example:

Dua tahun yang lalu, umur saya sembilan puluh tahun. (2 years ago, I was 19 yrs old).

Pada pesta yang lalu, saya ketemu Sue. (At the last party, I met Sue).

Sudah = already

Saya sudah menonton The Joy Luck Club - I have already watched The Joy Luck Club.

When put in a verb, 'sudah' gives a transition to make it a past tesnse. eg instead of saying i eat apple, using sudah in the sentence will mean that i ate an apple.

For example: Michael sudah makan? would mean, "Michael, have you eaten?"
James sudah ke universitas? would mean, "Has James already gone to University?"

Belum = not yet
Belum can be used on it's own.... eg, "Michael, sudah makan?" can be replied to with, "Belum!" (not yet!)

Belum can also be used as a question tag.

Anda sudah menonton Sin City, belum? You have already seen Sin City, haven't you?

today was my first indonesian lecture for this semester. it went ok, except i couldnt remember how to count. lol i had trouble during the holidays when Christina asked me to describe her in Indonesian.

Fortunately, after much revision during the class, I actually remembered stuff. Bu Indra went over these things about how to be a good language student. I remembered what things read in Indonesian, but not how to say it. This is similar to me learning Chinese. I'm more likely to be able to read a sentence and know what it means than speak a sentence without really thinking about it because you have to think about forming the sentence. The weird thing is that I didn't have that difficulty when I was learning Japanese - which is probably the language I have excelled in learning most other than English over the years.

In Indonesia, apparently people will ask you where you are going all the time. (But not being nosy... just a way of talking).

Some phrases they will use to ask where you're going (and valid answers to those questions) are:

Mau ke mana? - Where are you going?
Answer: - ke sana (over there), ke sini (over here), ke situ (nearby)

Dari mana? - Where did you go?/Where have you been?
Answer: - dari pub (from the pub), dari cafe (from the cafe), dari rumah teman (from a friends house)

Naik apa? - What did you go by?
Answer: naik sepeda (went by bicycle), naik bis (went by bus), naik angkot (went by minivan).
Saya ke kampus naik mobil. (I go to campus by car).

Dengan siapa? - With who?
Answer: dengan teman (with a friend)

Berapa ongkos bis ke kota? - How much is the fare to the city by bus?
Ongkos is fee/fare/price for transport. Harga cannot be used for this context.

omg... i just did the biggest mistake. those who i've told know i had a really, really bad friday (what with the traffic, job interview (although im not sure if i can even call it that now, that stupid... person), and the $100 fine) but yesterday i just found out the journal isnt due until the 27th May.

i think im getting foot in mouth disease. (haha) i thought the journal was due in friday, and because of that stupid job interview which wasnt an interview at all, i thought i had wasted time with the interviewer and i didnt have enough time to buy file dividers so i borrowed evelyn's post it notes to write "PART A", "PART B", etc and just stuffed all my stuff in a file.

i wonder if i can ask for it back.

VERBS

This page introduces you to a very important verb structure in Indonesian, the OBJECT-FOCUS structure. This may also be referred to as the passive voice structure.

ACTIVE VOICE SENTENCES

The most basic Active Voice sentence takes the pattern:
Subject + Verb + Object
where...

SUBJECT = the actor or doer in the sentence
VERB = the "doing" word; a word for actions or processes.
OBJECT= the person or thing that is acted upon or has the action done to it.

An active voice sentence is readily identified because the verb will take a "me"-type prefix ("me", "mem", "men" or "meng").

I thought I'd break up all this learning with some rambling.

1) It had been a while since I had seen my friend SB online. (also known as S__ Besar. ;)) I was telling her that I had just begun to learn Indonesian at uni. She said that her Indonesian was terrible now because they don't use it at home. (tsk tsk tsk!) Anyway, I was telling her all the Indonesian I had learnt and she was impressed. Or she was just saying that it was. Anyway I told her that the teacher had said people who want to practice their Indonesian with the Indonesian National Soccer Team could sign up. My friend said that was really cool and that I should sign up. I said I wouldn't, even though I love my soccer, cos I wouldn't be able to say anything apart from, "Kenalkan, nama saya Angela" and "Saya orang Malaysia. Saya berasal dari Perth". I'm not going to understand what they're saying! But if there's a cute soccer player maybe I'll ask, "Mampir ke rumah, yuk? ;)"

2) CHL asked once if I'm related to the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhono because a lot of the time I reply back to her, "I dunno". This time I replied to her, "Huh?" and she said, "E (her classmate) told C that the new President is Yudhono. Get it? Yudhono - I dunno." Oh. har di har har har. Very funny dear.

3) During WYD 2002, CP (Polish) and JI (Indonesian) were arguing about the Polish and Indonesian flags. CP kept arguing that Indonesia had stolen the Polish flag and just turned it upside down. Hmm...

4) To JI: "You're a terrorist! Get it? Jamah Islamiah (spell?) = JI and those are your initials!" *groans*

Indonesian syntax (word order)

The basic word order of Indonesian is very similar to English, for example:

Saya perlu taksi. = I need (a) taxi.
Saya datang kemarin. = I arrived yesterday.

There is one basic difference with Indonesian sentence structure. In Indonesian, the most important noun or subject is normally placed at the first of the sentence. If the subject of the sentence is also the object of the verb, then it is placed first and the passive form verb will often be used, ( a verb becomes passive when preceeded with "di-"). For example:

Buku itu ditaruh di sana. = Put the book over there.
(lit: book-that-put-at-there)

Bapak mau ke mana? = Where is father going?
(lit: father-want-to-where?)

Saya mau ayam goreng Kentucky. = I want Kentucky Fried Chicken.
(lit: I-want-chicken-fried-Kentucky)

Additionally, the subject within a sentence is often implied and not verbally communicated. For instance:

Nih - is like an exclamation mark. eg Kita terlambat, nih! (Kita = we, terlambat = late)
Kan - means right, isn't it?, aren't they? etc. eg, Hari ini Hari Jumat, kan?
Kalian - used to address more than one person if they are of a similar age or younger than you, or people you know very well.
Nggak - means or not, no? eg Anda suka Senin Rupa, nggak? (Do you like Art or not?)
Sudah - Already. eg Saya sudah belajar Sejarah. (I have already studied History)

Think of lewat as an addition... like 2 o'clock plus 5 minutes. (i.e., 2:05)
Think of kurang as a subtraction... like 3 o'clock minus 15 minutes . (i.e., 2:45)
Seperempat means 15 minutes. eg 2 o'clock plus 15 minutes - jam dua lewat seperempat (ie, 2:15)
Setengah means 30 minutes. If its 4:30, it must be Jam SETENGAH LIMA, which means half an hr before 5.
